Ireland’s Sam Bennett maintained his second stage win this year’s Vuelta a Espana on point 14 in Oviedo.
The rider crossed ahead in the third with Belgian Tosh van der Sande of Max Richeze of Argentina .
The end was dominated by a crash in the last kilometre that prevented a sprint to the line and took many in the peloton out.
Rush leader Primoz Roglic of Slovenia suffered from the crash but didn’t lose any time.
The period that was 188km was assumed to be a quieter day following two tough weeks from the saddle and mountain biking to return on Sunday and Monday.
It had been gearing up for a couple complete, but entering the last kilometre riders were sent tumbling on an incline.
Bennett appreciated a more comfortable victory than he could have imagined as Richeze along with Van der Sande was overtaken by him in the 500m, and was ahead of that.
After winning his fifth in a Grand Tour, along with point three years on 26 August following three at the 2018 Giro d’Italia it was his La Vuelta stage victory.
The 28-year-old is getting an exceptional year for this his 13th achievement.
„I am just delighted,“ Bennett told Eurosport. „I’ve reached my goal to the entire year, but there are just another one or two more wins .“
More to follow.
