Bears excited by David Montgomery’s tackle-breaking

David Montgomery will enter training camp later this month poised to combat Mike Davis for early-down reps from their Chicago Bears backfield.
Together with Tarik Cohen not expecting his function as primarily a pass-catching back to modify, Davis and Montgomery will take over the Jordan Howard gig, splitting the majority of initial – and second-down carries. Chicago coaches have insisted Davis has been brought into play a role, but it is Montgomery who has the greatest opportunity to acquire difference-making reps in 2019.

The third-round rookie elicited resounding praise from coaches and beat writers during offseason workouts. Running backs coach Charles London glowed about Montgomery’s ability to break tackles, noting his“pretty rare contact equilibrium .“
„He definitely possesses that,“ London lately told Adam Jahns of The Athletic. „It’s important from the running back position because every play is not going to be clean and every hole isn’t going to be clean. You have to make that all on your own. He did a bit of that in Iowa State. This has been something that we noticed. And that is something you can’t coach. You kind of got it or you do not and he does. It is something we immediately noticed about him.“
The opinions on Montgomery’s ability to break tackles stand compared to the previous two training staffs‘ belief that Howard’s biggest struggle came in generating yards after contact.
After creating praise during the shorts section of offseason workouts, Montgomery’s biggest test will appear when the pads are on during training camp and into the preseason. We have seen rookies crumble under the added pressure, and we’ve also seen young running backs — Phillip Lindsay at Denver is just one recent example — glow in camps, flashing tackle-breaking ability.
In case Montgomery lives up to the offseason hype that has been building, an already multi-faceted Bears offense is likely to make life that much easier on QB Mitchell Trubisky.
